猫の子
The Cat's Child
Katarina Woodman
At an Izakaya in the Edo period, one hand towel sometimes disappeared at night. One night, when the tavern owner went to work, he heard lively music from an empty area where no one was. When he went to investigate, he saw many cats gathered and at the center of it, his cat was dancing with a towel on its head. The owner said that he was convinced that it was because of his cat that the towel kept disappearing.
The place where this cat was dancing was called Odoriba, and later it became known as the valley of Nekomagaya in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture. In 1723 (8th year of Kyoho), a shrine dedicated to cats was built in Yanakacho to calm the spirits, and the entire village was designed with cat motifs everywhere. |
The village headman of Kamo Village (now Kamo Town) borrowed money from a wealthy man to save the village when their crops failed. Although he repaid the debt, the wealthy man plotted against him and falsely accused him of not paying. In despair, the village headman died of an illness. The wealthy man then confiscated the land collateral for the debt. When the village headman's wife, Omatsu, attempted to complain to the bugyō (magistrate)'s office, the bugyō accepted the wealthy man’s bribe and gave an unfair judgment. Then, when Omatsu tried to complain directly to the daimyō, she failed again and was executed. At the death of her beloved human, Omatsu's young kitten grew angry, seeking revenge, and rose as a bakeneko to destroy the daimyō and the bugyō's families.
Her hatred for humans grew until one day she found an innocent abandoned child. A boy. |
